The Travellers
Experience first, second and third class travel in the early 20th century. Here we also show you a marvellous restaurant carriage from the 1930s, painstakingly restored.
A window to the world
Over time, the railway begins to be used more and more for travelling, even long distances. The whole of Sweden can soon be reached by railway. The Inland Line (Inlandsbanan) is inaugurated in 1937, and the Swedish railway network reaches its greatest expanse, 16,886 kilometres, the following year.
For more and more people, buying a ticket, boarding the train and finding their seat becomes part of everyday life. It is easy to travel by train to visit friends and family – or to go on holiday. The railway station becomes a window to the world.
Trains are also becoming more comfortable. They are equipped with sleeper carriages and modern restaurant and café carriages to meet travellers’ needs and desires for comfort on the journey.
