Steam locomotive N 576
Steam locomotive N 576 was manufactured at Motala Verkstad in 1900. SJ was in need of new and stronger shunter locomotives and purchased eight of the N-series.
The locomotives are designed for heavy shunting and pushing on the Iron Ore Line (Malmbanan), i.e. pushing ore trains up hills. They met SJ’s expectations and a total of 64 locomotives of this model were purchased.
N 576 is a locomotive of the first production series. It was overhauled in 1929 with a superheated boiler and given the designation Na, only to be renamed N in 1942. The locomotive remained in service until the end of the steam locomotive era, both as an N locomotive and as a steam locomotive, and was shunted in Borås when it was retired as late as 1970.
N-locomotives are notoriously strong, and the staff also liked them for their speed. The locomotive is a distinctive shunting machine that is perfect for a railway yard with many freight cars.
The N 576 was taken over by the Swedish Railway Museum in the 1970s. It was restored to running condition by the Friends of Swedish Railway Museum association in Ängelholm in 2017.
