One of the most important decisions regarding the railway in Sweden is to divide SJ into one part that handles traffic ("New SJ") and one part that handles the infrastructure – Banverket. This means that financial funds from the state are directed to the infrastructure and the maintenance and construction of new railways.

SJ has continued to have a slightly too large suit and they are starting to steer the company towards a core business – running the trains. Other activities are successively abandoned during the 1990s to finally become a state-owned limited company in 2001: SJ AB. A pure freight unit is also created that only runs freight: Green Cargo AB.
